House cleaning! Is a louse in the house?

Parents often stress over cleaning when there is a louse in the house. Parents dealing with head lice may do way more than necessary with steam cleaning, throwing away stuffed animals and spraying insecticides. Heartland Healthy Heads Lice Removal and Resource Center provides a great deal of education to families dealing with head lice.

According to the CDC (, head lice are mainly spread through head to head contact with a person who already has head lice and less commonly through objects. While the National Pediculosis Association ( informs everyone, homes and schools do not get head lice, people do. Head lice are little, but mighty!  Head lice are smart do not like to be off the human head, they need to eat to survive and they feed off the human scalp. They will not survive much more than 24 hours off the human head. Just to be safe, here are some easy house cleaning tips:


1. Change bed sheets, wash and dry in hot temperature or throw in the dirty clothes and replace with another set.

2. Comforters and bedspreads can be removed for 24 hrs or thrown into the dryer for 30 minutes.

3. Stuffed animals, throw pillows and throw blankets in the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes.

4. Vacuum all areas frequently used by those with lice, including floors, furniture, car seats and upholstered areas.

5. Bag up all hair accessories for 24 hours or simply do not use them for 24 hours.

6. Clean the hair out of brushes, place in a baggie and put in the freezer overnight.

7. DO NOT use house fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not needed and can be toxic.
